Clara Hughes

Speed Skating -Long Track

français

Clara began speed skating at the age of 16, but decided at the age of 17 to switch to cycling. After more than one hundred cycling victories, including two bronze medals at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games, she returned to speed skating at the age of 28. After only 7 weeks of training she was named to the National Team and went on to win a bronze medal at the 2002 winter Olympic Games. Her medal at the 2002 Games made her the only Canadian and 4th ever athlete to win medals in both the Winter and Summer Games. Clara followed this up with 2 more medals (gold and silver) at the 2006 Olympics making her the only athlete to have won multiple medals at both the Winter and Summer Games. On January, 29 2010 she was named the Canadian Flag Bearer for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
