Captain Jean Labonté has played defense for many years on the Canadian Sledge Hockey Team and has a long standing record in the sport. Over his 14 years on the national team, he has proven himself to be a tenacious defenseman who puts his team ahead of personal pride. He demonstrates a wealth of experience, winning medals at four world championships (two of which are gold), in addition toparticipating in three Paralympics, winning gold in 2006 and silver in 1998. In 1986, at the age of 17, physicians detected osteosarcoma cancer and subsequently amputated Jean’s leg above the knee. During the 2007-08 season, Jean was named captain of Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team. He has been a member of Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team since 1996.
