Job Description:
TOURNAMENT OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP

GOLF CANADA
Our mission, as the governing body of golf in Canada, is to promote participation in and a passion for the game while protecting its traditions and integrity.

Golf Canada, the governing body of amateur golf in Canada, is looking forward to another successful championship season in 2013. With a schedule that includes 3 Professional, 8 Amateur and 6 CN Future Links Championships, the summer is a very busy time for Golf Canada. In order to assist with the considerable workload associated with Canada’s National Championships, Golf Canada assembles an intern team each summer. The following is one of several intern opportunities available within the Golf Canada.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP DATES:
Approximately May 6 – August 30, 2013 (end dates vary by team)

DESCRIPTION:
Golf Canada is looking for qualified applicants to serve as tournament operations interns within the Championship Division. The four (4) interns will travel as two teams extensively throughout Canada during the internship and will help conduct CN Future Links Championships, Golf Canada’s National Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championships and the CN Canadian Women’s Tour. Other exciting opportunities may include assisting the Championship Division with such events as the RBC Canadian Open and the CN Canadian Women’s Open.

TYPICAL HOURS:
Most days will begin between 5-6 a.m. and end between 8-10 p.m. every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. If you are not a morning person, require 8 hours of sleep nightly, or have difficulty being away from your family or friends for extended periods of time, this internship is not for you.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns will learn everything that is involved with conducting a golf tournament. Some of the duties and responsibilities include:
• General tournament set-up and preparation
• Golf course set-up and preparation
• Administrative tasks
• Starting and scoring of players
• Media and public relations
• Moderating equipment inventory, maintenance and replenishment
• Deliver high-quality customer service to all partners, participating facilities, volunteers and players
• Public speaking
• Drive the equipment truck and trailer to various championship sites across Canada

REQUIRED SKILLS:
• 3rd or 4th year College/University student preferred
• Ability to work and communicate in a team atmosphere
• Must be able to work cohesively with a teammate upon being with them 24/7 for an entire summer
• Highly motivated
• Willingness to work long hours in hot/cold weather and endure physical situations such as heavy lifting
• Valid and clean driver’s license with ability to drive and operate company truck & large equipment trailer
• Willingness to take active leadership role
• Excellent communication and public relations skills
• Basic computer knowledge and skills (Windows XP or 7, Access, Office 2000 or 2003, HTML an asset)
• Bilingualism (French & English) an asset
• Basic golf knowledge an asset

NUMBER OF TOURNAMENTS:
Summer intern teams will work approximately 6-7 tournaments during the summer months.

INTERNSHIP TEAMS:
Each intern team will consist of 2 operations interns. The team will travel as a pair to various tournaments across the country. Interns spend a great deal of time together striving to achieve common objectives and must be willing to work in a team atmosphere and learn how to effectively solve problems and difficult situations. It is the interns’ responsibility to overcome personal differences and grow as a team throughout the internship. If you are not a team player and find it challenging to meet the stated expectations, this internship is not an appropriate fit for you.

TOURNAMENT TRAVEL:
All intern teams travel via Golf Canada’s corporate trucks. Travel distances between championships vary and you will be expected to drive up to 8 hours daily.

CAREER ENRICHMENT:
There are countless benefits to participating in the Golf Canada Internship. You will meet and interact with many people. You will get to know the future players of the PGA and LPGA Tours. You will be around influential and successful members of the Golf Canada Board of Directors and Governors Council, work closely with golf professionals, directors of golf and course superintendents. In addition to the contacts made, the internship also serves as a training ground for full-time employment with Golf Canada. Many full-time Golf Canada staff have been hired following their time as a summer intern.

EXPENSES:
The following expenses will be paid by Golf Canada:
• All travel between sites
• All meals
• Hotel accommodations

Items NOT paid for by Golf Canada would include:
• Travel expenses incurred during free time
• Personal phone calls
• Night life/Alcohol consumption
• Personal purchases
• Laundry

STAFF UNIFORMS:
Adidas is the official sportswear of Golf Canada. Each intern will receive an assortment of shirts and a rain suit. Uniforms will be worn on all setup and tournament days. You will wear your own clothing on travel days.

SALARY:
$470/week + Per Diem. (All tournament-related expenses paid by Golf Canada)
