Position: Editor-in-Chief, Physical and Health Education Journal

Job Description:

Physical and Health Education Canada is a national, charitable, voluntary-sector organization whose primary concern is to influence the healthy development of children and youth by advocating for quality, school-based physical and health education. Physical and Health Education Canada advocates for and advances quality physical education and quality health education programs offered in Health Promoting Schools to enable students the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to lead physically active and healthy lives, now and in their future. The association is managed on a day-to-day basis by a professional office staff based in Ottawa.

Physical and Health Education Canada is seeking an Editor-in-Chief who will be responsible for the development and execution of four (4) issues of the Physical and Health Education Journal per year. The candidate will be a dynamic, well-organized individual with strong communication skills and the ability to multi-task. They should understand how telling stories about Physical and Health Education Canada, its members, allies, partners and other stakeholders can further our vision and mission. Expertise in physical and/or health education or related areas is an asset.

The selected candidate need not reside in Ottawa, but will work closely with the Communications Department and report to the Communications Manager. This is a contract opportunity, and compensation is commensurate on experience.

Responsibilities:
• Coordinate and oversee the blind peer review process for all scholarly articles. This includes acknowledging author, selecting reviewer(s), sending article review packages, following up with authors, preparation for publication, maintaining article files.
• Develop content and assemble all material for each issue of the Physical and Health Education Journal – this includes general issues and special issues.
• Edit all articles for publication.
• Write news content for print and web publication.
• Oversee the production of four (4) issues of the Physical and Health Education Journal per year – this includes coordinating graphic design, translation, printing and distribution of the print edition, and online distribution of an electronic edition.
• Ensure the Physical and Health Education Journal operates on budget.
• In conjunction with the Communications Department, develop editorial ideas, storyboards, and long-term strategic planning for the Physical and Health Education Journal.
• Contribute ideas and suggestions to a promotions and marketing plan for the Physical and Health Education Journal.
• Maintain the Editorial Review Board.
• Work with Physical and Health Education Canada staff to maintain the Physical and Health Education Journal content on the phecanada.ca website.

Qualifications:
• Post-secondary education in the area of education, health, sport and recreation, communications, journalism, or related discipline.
• Advanced post-graduate work or experience in the area of education, health, sport and recreation, communications, journalism, or related discipline is an asset.
• Experience writing and editing for trade publications, journals, magazines, or news.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (French verbal and written skills are an asset), with meticulous attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational, budgeting and administrative skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Familiar with the operation of not-for-profit organizations and working with volunteers.
• Self-starter and ability to work independently.
• Computer skills with Microsoft Office, email, Internet and web-based technology.
