The Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are only a short time away. It has been our experience over the last four quadrennials that the months before a summer Olympiad produce many selection disputes and related controversies. These disputes consume enormous energy and resources, attract harmful media attention, and distract teams and staff from Olympic and Paralympic preparation.

Although your selection criteria are in place there is still much that you can do to manage the risks associated with Olympic/Paralympic selection disputes. This workshop will equip you to better handle the disputes that may confront you in the coming months. Plan to attend to gain tools and resources to:

  • Implement your selection criteria properly
  • Improve the analysis and documentation of discretionary decision-making
  • Effectively communicate results of team selection
  • Improve the management of internal appeals
  • Determine when you can benefit from legal counsel
  • Make informed decisions about bypassing your internal appeal for a direct hearing before the SDRCC tribunal
  • Be a well-prepared respondent in the arbitration process
  • Accommodate affected athletes in the arbitration process
  • Manage the distraction for the rest of the team

This workshop is presented by:

  • Hilary Findlay, Steven Indig and Rachel Corbett of the Centre for Sport and Law, Inc.
  • Leanne Standryk of the law firm Lancaster Brooks and Welch, LLP
  • Brian Ward, lawyer and sports agent

Combined we have appeared over 20 times before SDRCC tribunals, and have managed disputes, hearings and internal appeals in the Canadian sport community for over 15 years.

This workshop is offered in English.

We thank SIRC for their assistance in making this event possible.
