Game 3 CIS M hockey University Cup: Lake 4, Aca 3

Game 3: 2006 CIS men’s hockey championship
Richards caps comeback, Wolves edge Axemen 4-3

March 24, 2006

By Dan Carle

EDMONTON (CIS) – The road weary Lakehead University Thunderwolves are on a mission.

“I haven’t been home in a month and a half,” said Pete Belliveau, the coach of the
Thunder Bay, Ont., based university team which came back to win its first game at the
University Cup Friday.

“We’re the team that travels the most in Canada, because of our geography.”

The Thunderwolves had plenty of jump in the third period as Jeff Richards scored the
game winner for a 4-3 win over the Acadia Axemen at the CIS men’s hockey championship
tournament on Friday.

“I lucked out, I guess you could say,” said Richards, a cousin of Philadelphia Flyers
rookie Mike Richards, who scored the go-ahead goal at 13:05 off a 25-foot wrister, just
over a minute after teammate Jason Lange had tied the game.

“We knew we had to go out and battle and that’s what we did.”

Lakehead trailed the Axemen 2-1 heading into the third period before Tobias Whelan got
the equalizer at 55 seconds.

Acadia temporarily regained the lead on Kevin Korol’s powerplay goal at 6:18 but Lange
and Richards replied for Lakehead.

Joel Scherban also scored for Lakehead’s first win in five career University Cup games,
while Acadia suffered a second straight third-period collapse in pool play.

“We had lots of chances, they just didn’t go in for us,” said CIS player-of-the-year
Kevin Baker, who scored the game’s first goal for Acadia. Blair Jarrett, and Korol also
scored for the Axemen, 0-2, champions of the Atlantic conference.

Baker and Blair Jarrett had given Acadia a 2-0 lead in the second period before Scherban
scored.

“I knew they were desperate,” said Belliveau. “We got a few breaks at the end.”

Lakehead goaltender Chris Whitley made 37 saves.

“He’s pretty good with the puck but you can’t tell here because the boards are pretty
dead,” said Belliveau of Whitley.

Alberta (0-0), the host and No. 1 seed at the six-team round-robin tournament, plays
Wilfrid Laurier (0-1) later Friday. The Golden Hawks dropped a 4-3 decision in double
overtime to McGill Thursday night.

The Axemen gave up four goals in the third period Thursday and lost 5-1 to Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan and Lakehead square off and Alberta and McGill meet Saturday to conclude
round-robin play before Sunday's final.

“Fans are in for a barn-burner,” said Belliveau. “It’s going to be old time hockey,
that’s for sure.”
