McLeod’s Streak Rolls On In Lethbridge
45-year-old bareback rider Don McLeod is like fine wine. He just gets better and better with age.
McLeod won the Lethbridge Spring Rodeo last weekend after an 80-point ride on Kesler Rodeo’s Three Reason’s, worth $729.
The Hanna, Alta.-based cowboy has made money at every single rodeo this season. Including the his winnings in Lethbridge, his seasonal income is second-best in the Canadian standings at $5,285 behind Texan Chris Harris.
Other winners in Lethbridge included: saddle bronc: Alan Bandy (Wainwright, Alta.), 83 points, $955; bull riding: Scott Schiffner (Strathmore, Alta.), 85 points, $1,220; tie-down roping: Chad Johnson (Del Bonita, Alta.) 8.1 seconds, $1,240; steer wrestling: Jody Brown (Calgary, Alta.) 3.8 seconds, $1,157; ladies barrel racing: Maria Gee (Stanford, MT) 12.04 seconds, $991; and team roping: Jim-Bob Gomersall (Moose Jaw, Sask.) & Brian Larson (Medicine Hat, Alta.) 4.9 seconds, $1,840.

CPRA Launches Novice Bull Riding Event
The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s (CPRA) board of directors announced last week that novice bull riding will be added as an optional event at Canadian professional rodeos.
The event—being introduced effective immediately—will be structured in the same fashion as the existing novice saddle bronc and novice bareback events.
Contestants between the ages of 16 and 21 will be eligible to compete in the novice bull riding.
The push for its inclusion came with support from the CPRA’s bull riding event director, Scott Schiffner, partially as a result of the abundance of non-CPRA sanctioned bull ridings that currently exist.
“With all of these bull ridings coming up, we’re going to be lacking entries at pro rodeos for some (rodeos) and we thought that it would be a pretty good idea to give them kids an opportunity to go,” he explained.
“We don’t want to lose all these little rodeos by not having any bull riders. If you don’t have any bull riders, the rodeo hurts as a whole.”
But, the event will serve as more than a means to increase bull riding entries at CPRA rodeos, it will also give younger contestants a chance to gain experience as they compete alongside their heroes and idols.
In the past, once a boys steer rider became ineligible to compete (reaching 15 years of age), they would have to wait until their 18th birthday to take out a CPRA bull riding permit. Under this new system, there will be a short one-year gap between eligibility as a boys steer rider and novice bull rider.
Schiffner also pointed out that the new event will be beneficial for the CPRA’s stock contractors, “It gives (them) a really good opportunity to buck their young bulls and weed them through a little bit. It should be good for everybody.”
The CPRA board also announced that it is now mandatory for all boys steer riders and novice bull riders under the age of 19 to wear CSA-approved helmets and face shields and for all boys steer riders and novice bull riders to wear protective vests regardless of age.

2006 CANADIAN RODEO TOUR
For the 2006 season, the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association will once again feature the Canadian Rodeo Tour, which is made up of 11 high-profile rodeos in Canada.
This high-excitement, talent-driven tour offers an added bonus to contestants who compete in it:
the top two point-getters in each of the five major events and barrel racing at the completion of the Tour will be pre-qualified for the 2006 Canadian Finals Rodeo.
These two berths are open to all full CPRA members who qualify, regardless of citizenship.
Points for each location will be distributed as follows:
1-head: 80 points for 1st to 10 points for 8th
Multi-head and aggregate: 40 points for 1st to 5 points for 8th (for each go-round and aggregate)
