TEAM CANADA ANNOUNCED FOR 2006 PAN AMERICAN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

TEAM CANADA ANNOUNCED FOR
2006 PAN AMERICAN JUDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ottawa: May 16, 2006 – The 2006 Pan American Judo are less than two weeks away and Judo Canada announced today the Canadian lineup for the Senior competition in Buenos Aires, Argentina May 24-28. With this competition, the Pan American Judo Union begins its selection process for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The team is highlighted by 2006 World Cup medallists Isabel Latulippe (48 kg), and Catherine Roberge (70 kg), as well as 2005 World Championships top-8 finishers Marie-Hélène Chisholm (63 kg) and Amy Cotton (78 kg). All four also won medals at the Pan American Championships last year in Puerto Rico, with Cotton bringing home the gold. The female team is completed by Aminata Sall (52 kg) and Olia Berger (+78 kg) – both returning to action after injuries – and Michelle Buckingham (57 kg), the veteran of the team and former PanAm Champion. The Canadian female team won a gold medal in the team competition last year, which has been part of the Pan American Championships since 2000.

The men’s side is anchored by 2005 PanAm medallists Frazer Will (60 kg), Sasha Mehmedovic (66 kg), Tyler Boras (81 kg), Alexandru Ciupe (100 kg) and Trevor McAlpine (+100 kg). Nicholas Tritton (73 kg), the most successful Canadian male judoka last season, is still looking to round into last year’s form. The team is completed by veteran Maxime Roberge (90 kg).

The Pan American Championships also features a Kata tournament. Canada will be represented in this non-Olympic event (involving the presentation of traditional, non combative forms of judo) by Jacques Mantion and Yves Pearson (Montreal, QC). This Canadian pair is multiple Canadian Champions, former PanAm Champions and winners of a variety of Kata tournaments at the World stage.

Canada’s strongest opposition is expected from the teams representing Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and the USA. All told, Canada won 14 medals at last year’s Pan American Championships. The full roster of the Canadian team is listed below.
