CLOVERDALE HOSTS SECOND TOUR STOP

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association’s top cowboys and cowgirls finished off their spring run in British Columbia over the May long weekend with three stops: Surrey, Luxton and Falkland.
The Cloverdale Rodeo & Exhibition, which is located in Surrey, was the second stop on the CPRA’s 2006 Canadian Rodeo Tour with over $245,000 in prize money up for grabs.
The 12-stop Tour offers an added incentive to the top two contestants in each of the five major rodeo events and ladies barrel racing at the completion of the Tour, they pre-qualify for the Canadian Finals Rodeo regardless of citizenship. With over $1 million dollars in prize money up for grabs, that’s a pretty good incentive.
6-time CFR saddle bronc qualifier Lance Mulvahill (Dawson Creek, B.C.) split second place at Cloverdale with Chad Ferley (Oelrichs, S.D.), Dalton Kraft (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and James Crozier (Pincher Creek, Alta.). The four cowboys picked up $4,106 apiece as well as 60 Tour points.
It was enough to move Mulvahill into first place in the Tour standings ahead of six-time world saddle bronc riding champion Dan Mortensen (Billings, Mont.) as well as on top of the Canadian standings.
The saddle bronc riding at Cloverdale was won by Jess Martin (Dillon, Mont.). Martin was 88 points on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s world champion superstar Cool Alley, worth $7,039.
The bareback riding event was dominated by American cowboys who claimed the top eight positions. Forest Bramwell (Pagosa Springs, Colo.) won the event with a 91-point ride on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Shootin’ Stars, worth $6,181.
Jordie Campbell (Bindloss, Alta.) won the bull riding with an 86-point effort on Kesler Rodeo Co.’s Repeat Offender. Campbell took home $7,168 and 85 Tour points, moving into third place in both the Canadian and Tour standings.
At the timed event end of the arena, the competition was incredibly tight with only 3.34 total seconds separating first and last holes in all four events combined.
47-year-old Joe Lucas (Carstairs, Alta.) showed that he’s still able to compete with the best in the world.
The four-time Canadian champion tie-down roper split first with Clint Robinson (Spanish Fork, Utah) after matching 7.2-second runs. They took home $5,448 each.
Brent Willsie (Caroline, Alta.), who made his first appearance at the CFR last year, won the steer wrestling two ticks faster than anyone else with his 3.5-second run, worth $5,715.
Another of last year’s CFR rookies, barrel racer Sierra Stoney (DeWinton, Alta.), won Cloverdale. Stoney was 9/100ths of a second faster than Chilliwack, B.C. cowgirl Janet Cunningham and was the top money earner at the rodeo winning $8,360. She also claimed top spot in the Tour standings with a total of 110 and sits on top of the Canadian standings with $9,953.
The team roping event was also dominated by American cowboys with 16 of the 20 money winners being from south of the border.
The team of Cory Petska (Lexington, Okla.) and Shain Sproul (Benson, Ariz.) won the rodeo with a 4.2-second run, winning $4,599 each.

2006 CANADIAN RODEO TOUR

For the 2006 season, the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association will once again feature the Canadian Rodeo Tour, which is made up of 11 high-profile rodeos in Canada.
This high-excitement, talent-driven tour offers an added bonus to contestants who compete in it:
the top two point-getters in each of the five major events and barrel racing at the completion of the Tour will be pre-qualified for the 2006 Canadian Finals Rodeo.
These two berths are open to all full CPRA members who qualify, regardless of citizenship.
Points for each location will be distributed as follows:
1-head: 80 points for 1st to 10 points for 8th
Multi-head and aggregate: 40 points for 1st to 5 points for 8th (for each go-round and aggregate)
