Judo – World University Championships

Michael Popiel of Montreal and Laurie Wiltshire of Calgary both posted fifth place finishes on Tuesday at the world university judo championships in Suwon, South Korea while Rashad Chin was ninth.

In men’s 66 kilos, Popiel won twice and lost twice. ‘’The competition was pretty strong and I had some good bouts,’’ said Popiel. ‘’My goal was a top-five finish.’’ There were 19 entries in the category.

Popiel won his opening two bouts by ippon against Carlos Nunez of Mexico and Volodymir Rogalskyy of Ukraine. ‘’Against Rogalskyy I fought well. I won on my opening ground attacks in the first minute.’’

Popiel then lost to world championship bronze medallist Miklos Ungvari of Hungary who scored a yuko with eight seconds to go to. In the bronze medal bout, Popiel fell to Osamu Enomoto of Japan. ‘’I knew Enomoto well because I trained with him in Japan from April 2005 to March 2006. He was assessed a non-combativity penalty at the start of the bout. I worked hard but he scored an ippon with 32 seconds to go.’’

In women’s 52 kilos, Wiltshire lost the bronze medal bout to Tatjana Trivic of Serbia by yuko. Wiltshire opened with victories against Narankhuu Ariunaa of Mongolia and Marin Yamaguchi of Belarus. She lost her next match to Me Jung Choi of South Korea.

‘’She faced some tough opponents,’’ said Wiltshire’s coach Mark Berger. ‘’She came close to a medal. She delivered excellent performances against quality opponents.’’

In men’s 60 kilos, Chin was also 2-2.

The world university championships continue Wednesday with the team competition. ‘’We won’t have a full team,’’ said Berger. ‘’We’re looking to gain some international experience.’’
