The Shenkman Family Foundation, through its program, “Kids and Values in Motion”, will donate 600 new bicycles to students in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board this year! On this, the 6th anniversary of the program, the Shenkman Family Foundation will have donated 4000+ new bicycles to children in Ottawa.

On Thursday, April 26th at 10:00am, 60 of the 600 children will receive their new bicycle at our media launch.

This is an amazing example of our community’s private and public sectors working in partnership to encourage students to lead healthy and active lives. We hope you can join us!

The Partners: “Kids and Values in Motion”:

· William (Bill) Shenkman, The Shenkman Group of Companies
· Mayor Larry O’Brien, City of Ottawa
· CEO Tony Pacheco, National Capital Region YMCA-YWCA
· Chair Rob Campbell, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board
· Students, many of whom will be receiving a bicycle for the very first time

WHEN AND WHERE:
· Thursday, April 26th, 2007, 10:00am
· Charles H. Hulse Public School Junior Gymnasium, 2605 Alta Vista Dr., Ottawa (closest major intersection: Bank and Alta Vista)

The “Kids and Values in Motion” program will continue through the spring as students from Beacon Schools receive their bicycles in staggered programs.

BEACON SCHOOLS AND WHY THEY ARE CHOSEN

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has designated 25 elementary schools as Beacon Schools. Fifteen randomly selected Beacon Schools have been invited to be involved in the Kids and Values in Motion Program each year. They are located in areas of the region where the need is greater than other areas. The OCDSB is part of a larger community concerned about children and youth at risk.

The following are some of the factors observed for designating elementary Beacon Schools:

· Poverty
· Family/Community
· Mobility
· Cultural/Linguistic Diversity
· Readiness to Learn

As a token of their appreciation for receiving the brand new bicycles, each student recipient will complete a story, poem, or visual design indicating their thanks and how they support the Y Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

For the students who are not physically able to ride a bicycle, the Shenkman Family Foundation will present them with gift certificates from Canadian Tire. These students will then be able select a piece a sporting equipment to enable them to have a healthy and active summer.

Special Note: The Shenkman Family Foundation, governed by an independent Board of Directors, supports programs which benefit the community overall, with a particular emphasis in helping children and promoting education. During the past 12 years, the Foundation has supported over one hundred charitable organizations. “Kids and Values in Motion” was a pilot program for 2002 and encourages children to lead healthy and active lives, through the donation of a new bicycle.
