TRACK AND FIELD: Canada’s Stefanie Reid Wins Bronze at Paralympic World Cup

MANCHESTER, England - Stefanie Reid of Thornhill, Ont., competed on a new artificial leg and broke her Canadian record en route to the bronze medal on Sunday in the women’s long jump for amputees in track and field action at the Paralympic World Cup.

World record holder Marie-Amélie Le Fur of France won the gold leaping 4.80 metres with April Holmes of the U.S., second at 4.62 and Thornhill third at 4.23. That eclipsed her previous national mark of 4.21.

This was Thornhill’s first competition with a new artificial right leg specifically designed for competition. She receive the prothesis just over a week ago and landed her Canadian mark on her first attempt in rainy conditions

"I really didn’t know what to expect," said Reid, 22, a graduate in biochemistry at Queens University. "But after I got off to such a good start I felt a lot of freedom to just go for it afterwards. It certainly gives me a lot of confidence for the rest of the season that I can improve my record even more."

The only other Canadian competitor Sunday was Eric Flemming of Oshawa, Ont. He was sixth in both the 100 and 200 metre sprints for athletes with cerebral palsy. He clocked 15.17 in the 100 and 31.95 in the 200. Both races were won by South African Teboho Mokgalagadi.

"It was good but not what I had hoped," said Flemming, a fire protection engineering student at Seneca College. "It was only my second meet this year but still I would have been liked to been closer to my personal best in the 100. I was most pleased with my start. I’ve worked hard to improve that part of my race during the off season."
