NATIONAL ABORIGINAL REGATTA

On September 8th, 2007, the Onake Paddling Club and CanoeKayak Canada hosted Canada’s first ever National Aboriginal Regatta in Kanawake, Quebec. Clubs from all over Canada were in attendance, including Indian Brook from Nova Scotia, North Bay Canoe Club, Aka:we Six Nations, Kanesatake Canoe Club, Onake Paddling Club and CanoeKayak BC. Luckily, Mother Nature decided to cooperate by blowing weeds off the course the night before the race making for a fast, weed-free course. Spectators and athletes spent a warm, sunny day on the shore of Onake enjoying great music, and exciting races.

The inaugural National Aboriginal Regatta featured Marathon, Dragon Boat, War Canoe, and Sprint races. The wide variety of races allowed racing opportunities for competitors of all ages and disciplines, and provided many exciting moments for the spectators. One highlight of the day was the War Canoe race in which a mixed crew of Aka:we Six Nations and CanoeKayak BC squeaked past the two Onake crews for a come from behind victory. There was stiff competition in the Pee Wee Women’s category, with three full heats of competitors. In the end it was an Onake sweep and Howie Diabo coming out on top.

Many thanks to the officials, Yves Guerard, Richard Archambeau, Jean-Guy Lahaie, and Bill McKee of AQCKV. Whether it was serving delicious dumplings, or rescuing a tipped boat, all the volunteers did a terrific job helping the event run smoothly. Lastly, thanks to Sharon Rice of the Onake Paddling Club and John Edwards, Domestic Development Director of Canoe Kayak Canada, who made this event possible. With the great success of this year’s race, CKC intends to host the Second National Aboriginal Regatta. We hope to see everyone back again next year! Results from the 2007 National Aboriginal Regatta can be found on the CKC website at www.canoekayak.ca.
