FENCER JUJIE LUAN MEETS OLYMPIC QUALIFYING STANDARD

Edmonton, AB, March 28, 2008 - The Alberta Fencing Association is proud to announce that Jujie Luan of Edmonton has met the Olympic qualifying standard set forth by the Federation Internationale D’Escrime (FIE). The FIE is the organization which governs fencing throughout the world. It is based in the Olympic capital Lausanne, Switzerland, and currently counts 127 member federations. Neither Jujie Luan nor Monica Kwan of Victoria, BC, finished in the top 64 of competition at the Challenge Jeanty in Marseille, France, today. Final results of the Challenge Jeanty will be made available at the end of the competition. Luan will await the final selection of the Olympic team which, will be announced by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) at a later date.

Jujie Luan is head coach of the Edmonton Fencing Club and is attempting to qualify for her fourth Olympic Games. Her achievements include winning a gold medal for China in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Fencing is a growing sport in Alberta, with 223 nationally ranked athletes, and a total membership of over 1000 in 2008. Alberta fencers are among the best in the country, including 2007 Pan American Women’s Epee Champion Catherine Dunnette of Calgary, Alberta.
