August 10, 2001
Mexico City, Mexico – Emmanuelle B. Dupuis of Montreal, QC, took her first
gold medal of the meet yesterday at the Pan Am Junior Championships in
Mexico City, Mexico.
Dupuis scored 316.95, winning her first spot on the podium in the girls
group B 3M springboard event.
“I’m surprised at the results,” said Dupuis. “I thought I could have dove
better, but I was thrilled when I found out I won.”
Fellow Montrealer Roseline Filion finished 5th with 293.50, while Kendra
Melnychuk of Saskatoon, SK, dove a score of 279.85 for a seventh place
finish.
Marianne Allaire-Morin of Montreal, QC, won Canada’s second medal of the day
in the girls group A 3M springboard competition. Allaire-Morin won a bronze
with 380.60.
“I missed my reverse 2 ½, which is generally my best dive,” said
Allaire-Morin. “But I’m happy with my other dives.”
Kelsey Patterson of Edmonton, AB, came in a close 4th with 378.80 and Laura
Knowles of Nepean, ON, took 6th with 374.15.
“The judging was much tougher than what I’m used to,” said Knowles. “But I
was very confident and I’m happy with the way I dove.”
The Pan Am Junior Diving Championships are divided into four age groups.
Group A comprises the eldest group of divers. They are born in 1983,1984 or
1985. The divers born in 1986 or 1987 are classified as Group B. Group C has
those born in 1988 and 1989 and finally Group D has those divers born in
1990 or later.
Also held yesterday was the girls group C 1M springboard event. Meaghan
Benfeito of Montreal, QC, came in just .6 of a point away from a bronze
medal. Her 4th place score was 196.50. Suzie Lafrance also of Montreal,
QC, finished 8th with 177.55. Jennifer Ferguson, of Pointe Claire, QC, won
gold on Wednesday in the girls group C platform event, but came in 11th in
the 1M event with 169.95.
“The girls group C event was filled with ups and downs,” said Isabelle
Cloutier, one of the Canadian coaches in Mexico with the team. “All of the
divers had great dives and they all missed a couple as well.”
Nicolas Leblanc of Montreal, QC, finished 7th in the boys group A 1M
springboard event.
“I had a great event, but I hit the board on my sixth dive,” said Leblanc
who scored 409.40. “That ended any chance of winning a medal.”

Saskatoon, SK, came in 11th with 376.15.
