SRC to televise QUFL game of the week
MONTREAL – The CBC’s French language network, better known as Societé Radio-Canada, has signed a two-year contract with Quebec Student Sports Federation to televise a university football game of the week package.
SRC will broadcast 13 Quebec University Football League games during the 2009 season, including the 41st annual Shaughnessy Cup contest between the McGill Redmen and Concordia Stingers, slated for Concordia Stadium on Oct. 24. Also scheduled is a QUFL semifinal, the league’s Dunsmore Cup championship, both CIS national semifinals and the Vanier Cup championship from Quebec City on Nov. 28.
All games will be simulcast on Sports Extra, the Sirius satellite radio network, in addition to being webcast on the internet (www.radio-canada.ca/sports).
Coverage kicks off on Sunday Sept. 6 between Concordia and Laval, the defending Vanier Cup champions, live from Quebec City. After that opener, all subsequent weeks will be aired live at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoons.
“Football has become without a doubt one of the most popular sports among young people,” said François Messier, director of sports at SRC. “Quebec is a national power at all levels of football and the numbers of Quebec players have increased significantly in the CFL and even the NFL. The return of football to our airwaves solidifies the type of sports schedule that we want to offer on Saturday afternoons.”
During the regular season, the Montreal Carabins are scheduled to appear four times on SRC. The Laval Rouge et Or, Concordia Stingers and Sherbrooke Vert & Or will each appear three times, with single appearances each for McGill, Bishop’s and Acadia.
“Over the last 10 years, Sport Etudiant has overseen the growth and development of football in Quebec,” said Michel Louis Beauchamp, general manager of the Quebec Students Sports Federation. “The number of teams in this province has increased from 100 to about 280. We are very proud that SRC has agreed to broadcast our games. Now, football fans across the country will be able to see and appreciate the quality of play in our league.”
