Canada concludes Para-swimming world championships with three more medals

RIO DE JANEIRO (December, 05, 2009) - Benoit Huot of Montreal collected his fourth silver medal of the competition and Brian Hill of Duncan, B.C., and Brianna Nelson of Victoria each added a bronze on Saturday to conclude the Para-swimming world short course championships for swimmers with a disability.

The 30-member Canadian team concluded the championships with 15 medals (four gold, five silver and six bronze).

In the men’s 100 freestyle in the S10 disability category, Huot clocked a Canadian record 51.73 seconds. That bettered his previous mark of 52.74 set in 2003. He also took silver this week in the 100 individual medley, 200 IM and 50 freestyle. In all four races Andre Esteves of Brazil won the gold in world record time.

‘I could have swum it a bit faster because I had some trouble at the end of the race,’’ said Huot. ‘’I couldn’t have asked for a better week. I was in six races and did personal best times in all six. Still, there are many things I can improve upon from here until London in 2012.’’

Hill reached the podium for the third time finishing third in the men’s S13 100 freestyle for visually impaired in 56.44 seconds. Devin Gotell of Antigonish, N.S., was ninth. Earlier this week, Hill won gold medals in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke with world record performances.

Other Canadian men’s results on Saturday: Danial Murphy of Sackville, N.S., was fifth in the S5 200 freestyle; Ronald Tang of Toronto was seventh in the S8 200 IM; Kyle McMahon of Prince George, B.C., was eighth in the S7 100 breaststroke and the 4X100 medley relay was disqualified.

On the women’s side, Nelson earned a second bronze medal clocking 3:11.65 in the S7 200 IM. Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C., was fifth and Stephanie McDougall of Maple Ridge, B.C., seventh. Nelson was also third earlier this week in the 100 IM.

Other Canadian women’s results: McDougall, Jenna Lambert of Kingston, Ont., and Krystal Shaw of Moose Jaw, Sask., were fourth, seventh and ninth in the S6 100 breaststroke; the 4X100 medley relay was fifth with Nelson, McDougall, Jenna Skieneh of Windsor and Brianna Jennet-McNeill of Ottawa; Camille Bérubé of Gatineau, Que., was fifth in the S8 200 IM; and Jennet-McNeill and Jessica Hodgins of Windsor, Ont., were fifth and seventh respectively in the S10 100 freestyle.

Craig McCord of Vancouver, the head coach of Canada’s Para-swimming team was pleased with the performances at the seven-day competition. Nineteen of the 30 Canadian swimmers were competing at their first world championships.

‘’We accomplished our goals,’’ said McCord. ‘’We wanted our veterans to stand up and race and they had a big challenge to win medals. It wasn’t easy. They worked hard for them and it was a solid effort. Our youngsters gave very positive performances and we saw some medals and major time drops. Still the world is getting faster and we’re going to have to step it up.’’

Stephanie Dixon of Victoria won Canada’s other two gold this week with world record performances in the S9 400 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Here is the list of Canadian medallists this week at the Para-swimming world short course championships:
