JULIA MURRAY NARROWLY MISSES THE PODIUM ON SECOND DAY OF RACING IN INNICHEN/SAN CANDIDO, ITALY

Innichen/San Candido, Italy (December 22, 2009) – It was a successful day for Julia Murray (Whistler, BC) as she narrowly missed the podium placing 4th in the second World Cup race of the 2009/2010 season. Team mate and yesterdays silver medalist Ashleigh McIvor (Whistler, BC) posted another strong result finishing just out of the finals in 5th spot.

On a sprint style course with no banked turns and as a result few passing opportunities, Julia Murray relied on strategy and a strong start to propel her to the finals. Murray was edged out after choosing the outside lane to combat the aggressive game plan used by Ophelie David (FRA) in the previous heat against team mate McIvor. Murray missed her start and found herself if 4th spot over the first transition and was unable to gain any ground.

“I was really pleased with my result today, my starts were much better than yesterday and I nailed every one till the finals,” said Murray. “As a team we all favour courses with terrain, banked turns; good transitions are actually easier on the body and create a more even playing field.”

When asked about her confidence moving into the new year Murray responded, “I try to take the positives and confidence out of every race and today I took a great deal of confidence in beating a lot of the Alpine girls. With this result I’m in a much stronger position than I was last year and I feel good going into the New Year.”

Ashleigh McIvor (Whistler, BC) had another strong result and in turn solidified her spot in the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. In the Semifinal heat a miss timed pole plant out of the start left McIvor out of position off the first transition opening the door for Ophilie David (FRA) to take an aggressive line and pinch McIvor out of contention.

“I stuck with the same game plan that I followed yesterday and it seemed to work again, missing the pole plant resulted in me being pinched and just missing the final but I’m psyched that I have now met criteria for the Olympic team!” said McIvor.

The top Canadian man today was Stanley Hayer (Calgary, AB) who over came the technical difficulty he experienced yesterday, looked solid and more aggressive in today event placing 11th on the day. Dave Duncan (Golden, BC) had another strong day matching his best World Cup result by making it to the quarterfinals and placing 14th. As well, Nik Zoricic posted another good result for a relative new comer to the team securing 20th spot.

When asked about the course and the event, Eric Archer, Canadian Team Head Coach had this to say, “Anytime you have a short and relatively flat course the field really tightens up. There are few opportunities to pass and it gets rough out there. The guys’ heats in particular were really rough as the athletes jockey for position. We’re really proud of Julia and Ashleigh today they skied smart and executed well and that’s all we can ask.”

The next race will be from St. Johann Austria on January 5th, 2010.

On behalf of Athletes and Staff of the Canadian Ski Cross Team we wish you all and safe and happy holiday!
