SILVER MEDALIST LEADS OLYMPIC SAILING TEAM

SILVER MEDALIST LEADS OLYMPIC SAILING TEAM

Kingston, Ontario July 15, 2004 - The Canadian Yachting
Association (CYA) today announced that Olympic Medalist
Evert Bastet of Hudson, Quebec will be the official
Team Leader for Canada's Olympic Sailing Team in Athens
next month. The 1984 Silver Medalist from the Los
Angeles games will guide a team of eleven (11) Canadian
athletes named by the CYA today and competing in 6
Olympic classes. The Athens Summer Games begin August
13.

Of the eleven Canadian Sailing Team members that Bastet
will lead to Athens, Olympic veterans Ross Macdonald
and Richard Clarke are both considered strong contenders
for an Olympic medal. Ross Macdonald of Vancouver
competes in the Star class with teammate Mike Wolfs
from Mississauga. Richard Clarke of Toronto and Victoria
competes in the Finn class.

Bernard Luttmer of Pickering, Ontario, the youngest member
of Canada's Olympic Sailing Team competes in Laser and
has demonstrated strong international finishes. He is
considered another strong medal contender. The 470 class
team of Jen Provan from Toronto and Nikola Girke of
Vancouver has made remarkable strides in recent
competitions. They are a team to watch. Oskar Johansson
of Oakville and John Curtis of Kingston are the top
ranked Tornado class team in Canada while Yngling class
team members Lisa Ross, of Toronto and Halifax, Chantal
Leger of Senneville and Deirdre Crampton of Toronto
are expected to finish in the top eight countries on
this, their first Olympic campaign.

Great Britain, France, Germany and Australia are all
expected to provide stiff competition for the Canadian
Team. The Canadian Sailing Team supports members who
have trained and competed in all nine of the Olympic
sailing classes. Some countries have concentrated
their efforts on only a few classes where they had
the best chances to win a medal. In spite of this,
Canada is qualified at the level of Top Twelve
Countries in six of the nine classes – a very
significant accomplishment and a clear demonstration
of excellence in CYA Team leadership and coaching.
