Benalto Pro Rodeo flies under Calgary Stampede’s radar
Believe it or not, there were actually two pro rodeos taking place in Canada last weekend.
The first one, of course, is the first regular-season $1-million rodeo, the Calgary Stampede, which continues through this Sunday.
The other one was the Benalto Pro Rodeo, which took place July 8-10.
With every dollar earned counting towards qualifying for the Canadian Finals Rodeo, each and every rodeo is another for the contestants to boost themselves upwards in the Canadian standings.
Some of the cowboys and cowgirls who took advantage of the Benalto Pro Rodeo were:
Levi Harbin (Peers, Alta.) won the saddle bronc riding on Peters and Sons’ 1,300-lb. sorrel gelding, Tulsa Time, earning $1,187; Debolt, Alta.’s Dusty LaValley, who earned more than $40,000 in Canada last year, split first place in the bareback riding after an eight-second bout with Peters’ Take The Plunge. LaValley’s 84 points matched New Zealand’s Rodney Ruxton who tangled with Peters’ 2004 CFR-selected mare, Gold Dust.
Ruxton has been red hot lately. So far this season he’s made money at eight of the 14 rodeos he’s entered, winning first at six of them.
Tanner Girletz (Cereal, Alta.) won the bull riding onboard Peters’ outlaw, High Tide. Girletz, who’s currently fourth in the Canadian standings, is well on the way to qualifying for his second consecutive trip to the Canadian Finals.
Current rookie standings season leader, Shawn Williamson (Mankota, Sask.) won the tie-down event with a 7.7-second run, worth $956.
Reigning Canadian steer wrestling champion Justin Guenthner (Consort, Alta.) moved into the top ten with his win at Benalto. He made $1,097 for his 4.2-second effort.
Last year’s barrel racing rookie of the year, Joleen Seitz (Savona, B.C.) moved to within $240 of current season leader Rayel Robinson.
The Calgary Stampede continues this week with the $75,000 showdown taking place immediately after the final round this Sunday.
Current results for the Calgary Stampede can be found at:
