2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics
With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games starting this week in Vancouver, Olympic fever is upon us. It is hard to walk down the street without seeing someone wearing the famous red mittens or open the paper and not see stories about the Vancouver Olympics. These Games are sure to be an action-packed two weeks but what will make the Vancouver Olympic Games stick out? Not only have they created what they claim to be the fastest speed skating and luge tracks … ever, they have also created the most sophisticated and comprehensive anti-doping programs yet. It does not end there! VANOC is hoping to pull off the “greenest” Games so far by including initiatives such as planting two trees for every tree that was cut down during the preparation for the Games. So put on your Canadian colours, cheer on our athletes and make these the best Games ever.
SIRC would like to wish all athletes good luck at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics!

Show your Pride
With the countdown to the games coming to an end, now is the time more than ever to show your national pride! The Olympics like no other have the ability to sweep people up in a wave of national pride and unity. Canadians have much to cheer about over the next few weeks, not only are we the host nation but Canada will be represented by 206 athletes at the Games. So show your support in any and everyway; already over 1 million Canadians are sporting a pair of the red mittens. The Canadian Olympic Committee’s campaign “paint the town red”, allows you to view and share ideas on how to show your support with Canadians across the country. SIRC recently took on this challenge and decided to "paint the office red"! (see photo). Whether you wear red or decorate your front lawn, it’s up to you, but show your support for Canada this Olympics! Go Canada Go!

Environmental Initiatives
Three aspects of growing importance to large scale sporting events like the Olympic Games are environmental, economic, and social stewardship. Ask A SIRC Librarian |
|

SIRC members have access to SIRC librarians and we are pleased to share some of your questions.
Dear SIRC Librarian:
I was wondering if you knew where I can contact our Canadian Athletes competing in Vancouver. Is there a database with all the athletes contact information? Is it available to the general public? The "Paint the Town Red" program suggests sending a letter or emailing the athletes but I can’t find their addresses. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Beth
