Risk Management

Risk is a part of sport. Facilities, organizations, coaches, administrators, athletes, volunteers and officials can be directly impacted by the risk of legal issues, injury or economic downfall. Although it is impossible to avoid risk, educating yourself on risk management can minimize the impact.

SIRC is pleased to bring you the latest information and resources on Risk Management. The SIRC Seminar on June 10th will feature Dina Bell-Laroche of the True Sport Secretariat and Rachel Corbett of the Centre for Sport and Law.

Managing Volunteer Worker Risk

Preservation of an organization's assets is one of the primary goals of risk management. Most of those who work with volunteers would agree they are valuable assets, worthy of developing and preserving, notwithstanding the fact this can be a challenging task.  Treat volunteer workers just as you would an employee. Create a job description, which includes a list of the qualities and skills needed for someone to successfully perform the role and duties needed.

Management by Values

It is often said that there is nothing more powerful than a good idea whose time has come. The time has never been better for sport organizations to consider the important role of values in their mandate and activities, and the contribution that ‘management by values’ can make in their operations. In the recently released report on federal/provincial/territorial priorities for collaborative action under the Canadian Sport Policy, four new priorities have been identified for the 2007-2012 period. Two of these priorities are enhanced community capacity and implementation of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model.

Risk Assessments

In this piece Marcus Bailie would like to look at how a Risk Assessment document can be used, indeed can most usefully be used, with an impressive economy of bureaucratic efficiency. It is the principle of 'why let one piece of work only be used for one task when it can be used for two or more?'

Any Questions?

David Letterman offers his television audience a nightly "TOP Ten List." In this issue, Dr. Richard Borkowski offers the top ten most-asked questions received about risk management.  These questions arise during workshops, in response to articles, over the phone, by mail, and now via e-mail. The answers come from 35 years of experience in sport and recreation risk management. They are practical ideas, not legal advice. Consult your lawyer for legal interpretations.

Risky Business

To succeed in athletic administration today, you have to take risks. You need to step out of the norm and try something new to stand out and make your constituents take notice. At the same time, however, you don't want to do something that is unwise. In other words, you need to balance the benefits of taking a risk (the possibility of success) with the negative aspects of a risk (the potential for failure).

Olympic Hopefuls

Long before athletes go for the gold, manufacturers are making deals to supply the countless materials and supplies used to make the games possible. Chicago has just one-in-seven odds of hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics. But judging by the buzz, you’d think it was a lock. Twenty-seven sites for new and existing sports facilities – arenas, aquatics centers, a boxing pavilion and a velodrome among them – are already identified on a downtown Chicago map

Ask A SIRC Librarian

SIRC members have access to SIRC librarians and we are pleased to share some of your questions.

Dear SIRC Librarian:
I am the new President of a small swimming club. This year our coaches gave out awards to some of the swimmers. I am ambivalent about this practice. I don't object to recognizing swimmers for their accomplishments but I do wonder what impact the awards have on those swimmers who don't get recognized. Do you have any literature that would help me to develop more insight and wisdom about this practice and its place in the development of young athletes?

Sincerely,

Jennifer
