Sport History

As the end of year approaches, it is time to look back and reflect on the past. With the SIRC Collection dating back to the 1700s, our librarians have gone into the vault to share some of these interesting archives with you. These articles demonstrate how far we have come in our beliefs on sport and physical activity.

1892 -Curling in Canada Pt.1

Asserts that the game of curling is not just for old men but players of all ages. States that there are 600 curling clubs with 20,000 members in Scotland, 40 clubs in England and Ireland, and 100 clubs in Ontario and 50 in other provinces. Describes some of the curling matches he has witnessed, using commentary from various curlers. Throughout these descriptions the author emphasizes the importance of humor, good manners, skill, strategy, social interaction and sportsmanship that make the game a pleasure to play.

1894 -Philosophy on the Bleachers

What draws people to sport? When France wanted to improve the health of their schoolboys they traveled to England and America to study athletics and were shocked at what they saw. The athletic temper could be seen not as sensitive or intelligent but active, courageous, and ready to endure discipline; it could be compared to war. Athletic life is like a rebellion against industrial tyranny and therefore cheering from the bleachers can be seen as an expression of rebellion and pent-up energy.
