SIRC Learns About Popular Sports in Japan

SIRC recently traveled to Tokyo, Japan for the International Associations for Sports Information’s (IASI) Annual General Meeting. SIRC representatives toured the Japan Institute of Sports Science, Kasumigaoka National Stadium, Prince Chichibu Memorial Sports Museum and Sports Library of Nippon Sport Science University.

As a result of their travels SIRC was pleased to add information about these venues as well as various Japanese sport statistics into the SIRC Collection.

The Sasakawa Sports Foundation is a non-governmental organization in Japan that promotes sports. Semi-annually they conduct a national sport and lifestyle survey. SIRC is delighted to share with you the highlights from “The 2006 SSF National Sport-Life Survey”. Level of Participation in Physical Activity

  • 15.9% of Japanese adults participate in physical activity more then twice a week for longer then 30 minutes
  • 31.7% of Japanese adults have not participated in physical activity at all over the last 12 months

Top 10 sports and means of physical activity for Japanese adults is:

  1. Strolling
  2. Walking
  3. Calisthenics and light exercises
  4. Bowling
  5. Weight training
  6. Golf on a course
  7. Swimming
  8. Golf practice on driving range
  9. Sea bathing
  10. Fishing

Volunteer Sport Activity

  • 7.3% of Japanese adults have volunteered for a sporting event
  • 37.5% of volunteers were in the role of an event assistant for a community sporting event

Top 7 Spectator Sports

  1. Professional baseball
  2. Amateur baseball
  3. Japan Professional Football League (soccer)
  4. Marathon/Ekiden (relay marathon)
  5. Horse racing
  6. Amateur football (soccer)
  7. Professional sumo wresting
