Ask a SIRC Librarian

Question:

Dear SIRC Librarian:
I am the new President of a small swimming club. This year our coaches gave out awards to some of the swimmers. I am ambivalent about this practice. I don't object to recognizing swimmers for their accomplishments but I do wonder what impact the awards have on those swimmers who don't get recognized. Do you have any literature that would help me to develop more insight and wisdom about this practice and its place in the development of young athletes?

Sincerely,

Jennifer

Answer:

Dear Jennifer:

Thank you for sending in your question. SIRC does have documents that discuss the use of reward motivation that may be of interest to you.

Some examples are:

Since you have access to the SportDiscus with Full Text through your members area, you can retrieve a number of full-text documents on the subject of motivation, rewards and youth development by using keyword searching with any of the following terms:

  • Motivation
  • Reward*
  • Individual development

You can also narrow down your search by combining these terms with child* and/or adolescen* or youth* . In all these cases the '*' truncates your words and allows for expanding your search to include plural or different verb tenses of the original keyword. (For Example adolescen* will search for adolescent, adolescents or adolescence)

You can use the Search history/Alerts tab to combine searches that you have done.

If you find material that you like you can click on the "Add" section and it will collect the articles into a folder where you can then email/download/ or print the references in the citation style of your choice.

Hopefully this will have helped you. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further requests.

Sincerely,

Your SIRC Librarian
