Ask a SIRC Librarian

Question:

Dear SIRC Librarian:

How do I correctly search for all of the articles written by a particular author? Also, if I cannot access full text articles online, and only the abstract, would I be able to access the full text if I was at SIRC library in Ottawa personally?

Thanks,

Dan

Answer:

Hi Dan:

Thank you for contacting SIRC with your question regarding author search and document delivery request.

Author Search Question:
To do an author search in the SportDiscus™ you would enter the [ last name, first name ] and select 'AU Author' from the drop down box on the search menu.

For example, if you were the author you would enter: Smith, Joe

Please note; if there are variations to the name you should use the asterisk (*) following the first initial in the first name. For example, if you published articles using Joseph or your middle initial you may miss them using the name Smith, Joe. You should use: Smith, J* to get all of the variations of your name. This however also means that you get all other names that start with ‘J’.

Document Delivery Question:

An annual membership includes unlimited documents and a monthly membership includes five document delivery requests. (If you need to access more than five documents you can order them via our document delivery service for a fee). Alternatively you can visit us at the library and access them in person. We have a photocopy machine that can be used by the public and the cost is 10-cents a sheet. The library has the most recent and/or popular items on the shelves. You can contact us beforehand and we can let you know if it stored on or off site.

If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact me again.
