Board of Directors

Effective management is very important within your organization; a critical part of this is the board of directors. The board of directors is made up of volunteers elected because of their expertise. Their responsibilities are to assist and advise your sport organization on governing, managing and developing the organization. As the role of a sport organization is continuously changing and beginning to resemble more of a business model, organizations rely on members of their board in areas such as finance, human resources, technology and marketing. Finding the balance between the sport organization’s management and the board of directors is essential, it is important that the board knows what is expected of them and the sport organization knows what the board expects in return.

Governance in Sport Organisations

Governance is a critical component of the effective management of a sport organisation. Due to the changing nature of sport organisations, most notably the movement to adopt business models of operation, questions of appropriate forms of governance have attracted increasing research attention in the sport sector. This paper reviews the governance literature in sport management, and discusses issues of board roles and board composition. Four governance theories are presented to help us better understand how to interpret the function of board roles in sport organisations. We conclude by suggesting future research directions.

Roles of the Board

Amateur sport organizations, like other nonprofit community service organizations, are facing numerous challenges associated with the management of financial resources, changing membership/customer needs, human resource management including volunteer management, and the need for new markets, partners, and ways of work. Dual leadership between board volunteers and the executive director is a significant aspect of the way of work in nonprofit organizations. One aspect of the dual leadership is the identification of appropriate roles for the volunteers and staff and analysis of how the roles are shared in practice.

Best Practice Governance

The paradigm of sport participation as well as sport management has shifted globally from amateur to professional levels. Sport now operates in the business environment as an economic entity and, as such, is more complex to govern. Concerns in corporate business practice such as globalization of business that transcends national laws and the regulations of a single country, increasing pressure on companies to achieve superior financial returns and increased public expectations of accountable and transparent behavior have resulted in the formalization and development of codes for corporate governance.

Ask A SIRC Librarian

SIRC members have access to SIRC librarians and we are pleased to share some of your questions.

Dear SIRC Librarian:
I am looking to find articles regarding when athletes can return to their sport (wrestlers in particular) after treatment of tinea corporis (tinea gladiatorum). I have researched quite a few articles but no time frame is given. Could you find anything for me?

Thanks,

Dr. Crowther
