Ask a SIRC Librarian

Question:

Dear SIRC Librarian:

I am looking to find articles regarding when athletes can return to their sport (wrestlers in particular) after treatment of tinea corporis (tinea gladiatorum). I have researched quite a few articles but no time frame is given. Could you find anything for me?

Thanks,

Dr. Crowther

Answer:

Dear Dr. Crowther:

I have found several resources that may assist you with your answer. In the NCAA Wrestling Handbook they outline the diagnosis and treatment for tinea infections. It is located in Appendix D. The PDF version of the document is located here: http://www.ncaapublications.com/Uploads/PDF/2008_wrestling_rulesa7547fb4-211e-409c-aa13-1350bf282560.pdf

Also, on page 114 of the 1997 edition of ACSM's Essentials of Sports Medicine there is a section concerning tinea infections (in general) that states under Treatment and Participation/Prevention the following information:

3. Treatment

  1. Topical imidazoles are first-line therapy, followed by the allylamines (dermatophytes).
  2. 1 : 10 acetic acid soaks may enhance healing of tinea pedis.
  3. 3 days of topical steroid may reduce pruritus and erythema.
  4. Oral griseofulvin (dermatophytes), ketoconazole, fluconazole, and itraconazole are useful in resistant or widespread cases.

4. Participation/prevention

  1. Frequent change of clothing.
  2. Drying powders.
  3. Rarely, may need daily application of antifungal.
  4. Cotton clothing, breathable shoes.
  5. May participate if area covered.

I have also included a list of resources from the SIRC Collection that may be of interest to you below. If there are any that are of interest to you can order them through out document delivery department at orders@sirc.ca providing your contact information and the [S-#} listed above each item. Information on document deliver is available here: http://www.sirc.ca/products/sircexpress.cfm.

If you have any additional questions or concerns please let me know.

Sincerely,

Your SIRC Librarian
