Ask a SIRC Librarian

Question:

Dear SIRC Librarian:

I just became a member of SIRC and I am wondering how do I search for articles/research papers on specific issues? I am especially interested in Running Economy.

Thanks,
Greg,
Ontario Association of Triathletes

Answer:

Hi Greg :

Thank you for emailing SIRC with your question. There are many articles on running economy in the SIRC Collection.

To start your search you will want to access the SPORTDiscus™ with FullText:

When you reach the search page your will see three search boxes.

If you want to see what is in the database on running economy in general:

  • Type “running economy” in the first box and click on Search

There will be approximately 475 documents from this search. If you want to refine your search select “Advanced Search” just below the three search boxes. From here you can set parameters such as date, Full Text availability, language, Peer Reviewed.

Because running economy involves oxygen consumption versus distance covered there are additional keywords that you may want to use combined with running such as:

  • Velocity
  • Performance
  • Efficiency
  • Oxygen uptake

You can also include a particular sport to a search box (like triathlon).

Below are some articles that you will be able to locate.

I have also included instructions for basic searching using the SPORTDiscus™ with FullText. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Your Sport Librarian
