Canada Games

SIRC is excited to be attending the 2009 Canada Games held in PEI from August 15-29. As Canada’s National Sport Library, we will be there with the SIRC Mobile Resource Centre providing athletes, coaches, parents, officials and the media with access to the latest sport resources. Our Reference Librarian, Brandie Adams, will be on-hand to showcase the resources available at SIRC and answer questions. Make sure that you check out the SIRC Blog, Twitter and Facebook pages for updates throughout the event!

Whether you are a parent, athlete or coach it is important to remember younger athletes often have different requirements when it comes to training, nutrition and competition. For this reason it is important to keep informed about the various aspects of a developing athlete. Stress, sleep, conditioning and nutrition can play a huge role in the performance of young athletes. All are challenging in a typical teenage lifestyle being informed and learning how to manage these areas is essential to a competitive athlete.

Nutrition for the Serious Young Athlete

Serious young athletes form a very special group of individuals within the sporting population. In effect they live two lives, one as an elite athlete and the other as a schoolchild or student growing up at home, school or college with their non-sporty peers. This can pose many lifestyle problems for young athletes, one of which revolves around their nutrition not only for normal growth and development but to meet the extra nutritional demands of their sport. The problem is compounded by a certain lack of knowledge of what the athlete’s diet should contain and once that knowledge is gained, knowing how to apply it practically to the every day situation. This article offers guidance for anyone who may have a part to play in this part of a young athlete’s life.

Sport Conditioning for Children and Youth

The changes that occur as a child grows to adulthood are physical, emotional, psychological and social, impacting every aspect of life and sport. There are predictable phases of change that every child experiences, but the amount of time in each growth phase can vary greatly. Grouping children by age alone does not account for the rate and stage of growth. To fully understand athletes' needs, coaches must consider both their developmental age (e.g., pre-puberty, puberty or post-puberty phase) and training age (e.g., their combined years of sports experience and sports conditioning).

Reducing Stress

What causes an athlete to feel stress? Sources of stress come from within as well as outside the athlete, and as children grow as both individuals and athletes, the sources of stress may change. They may at times feel that the demands of the sport or competition are too great given their abilities and the resources they possess to handle the situation.

Getting Enough Sleep

Studies have shown that athletes sleep less than non-athletes and have even more problems sleeping prior to competition. There are various strategies for athletes to improve their physical recovery such as relaxation strategies, massage, active rest, etc. but probably the best recovery method, sleep, is often neglected. The purpose of this article is to help coaches and parents to better help their athletes and give them three suggestions for helping their athletes improve their sleep quality.

Ask A SIRC Librarian

SIRC members have access to SIRC librarians and we are pleased to share some of your questions.

Dear SIRC Librarian:
Can you help me find some information on what an athlete should look for when selecting a coach? There seems to be information on how organizations hire a coach and how coaches should communicate with athletes but not specifically on what an athlete should look for.

Thanks,
Steve
