Ask a SIRC Librarian

Question:

Dear SIRC Librarian:

Do you have information on spectator or fan violence?

Thanks,

Ted,

Lecturer, USA

Answer:

Dear Ted:

Thank you for emailing SIRC with you question regarding spectator and/or
fan violence in sport. This topic is quite popular and we have quite a bit of material that may be of interest to you.

When looking for information on your topic I would suggest using the following search string as a start:

violence and (spectator or fan)

You will have a large number of references (over 800). To narrow this down further you can add the following criteria:

- Peer Reviewed (For academic articles)

- Date: January 2004- August 2009

Please note that by adding peer reviewed to your criteria you may eliminate some research level material that is not from peer reviewed publications.

By using this search string and criteria you will narrow your results to approximately 39 bibliographic references.

A few examples of what you will find from this search are:

Kim, S., Andrew, D., & Greenwell, T. (2009, January). An analysis of spectator motives and media consumption behaviour in an individual combat sport: cross-national differences between American and South Korean Mixed Martial Arts fans. International Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorship, 10(2), 157-170.

Spaaij, R. (2007, July). Football Hooliganism in the Netherlands: Patterns of Continuity and Change. Soccer & Society, 8(2/3), 316-334.

Redhead, S. (2004, Autumn). Hit and tell: a review essay on the soccer hooligan memoir. Soccer & Society, 5(3), 392-403.

If you have any additional questions or concerns please let me know.

Sincerely,

Your SIRC Librarian
