Concussions

Statistics on how many athletes a year suffer a sport related concussion are foggy. It is estimated that there are 110 concussions per 100,000 Canadians (children and adolescents up to 200 per 100,000). Add to this the NHL's Sidney Crosby being diagnosed with a concussion in early-January followed by the results of Bob Probert’s brain scan by Boston University; concussions have become a hot topic throughout 2011. Organizations like Canadian Academy of Sport and Execise Medicine (CASEM), Hockey Canada, SIRC and ThinkFirst.ca are developing programs to educate athletes, coaches, parents, physicians, and administrators on the seriousness of this type of injury.

Ask A SIRC Librarian

Dear SIRC Librarian:

I have heard that there are different kinds of concussions and wanted to know what the difference between a linear concussion and a rotational concussion is?

Thanks,

Peter
