Ask a SIRC Librarian

Question:

Dear SIRC Librarian:

I am working on a report for use with our athletes where a nutrition plan would be linked to the overall annual training plan. I want to find sources of how much various minerals and vitamins are used during various activities and how long it takes to replace them. We have lists of foods and their contents (the nutrients) but now we need to determine how much is consumed, and how fast it can be supplied, so that meal/snacks can be better planned. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Ken,
TKD coach

Answer:

Dear Ken:

Thank you for sending your question to SIRC Ask-A-Librarian.  There seems to be quite a bit of research on the vitamin and minerals that the body needs during exercise examining a variety of sports from adventure racing to tennis.  Are you looking for general information or research studies?  Are you looking at athletes in a particular sport?  The type of information that you are looking could vary from sport to sport as well as climate (heat vs cold).  I have provided a few general examples below.  If you would like to email me some more details I would be happy to look for additional information and help develop a search outline.

General nutrition books that provide information on the role of vitamins and minerals include:

  • Manore, M. and Thompson, J. (2000). Sport nutrition for health and performance.
  • Jeukendrup, Asker and Gleeson, Michael (2004). Sport Nutrition: An Introduction to Energy Production and Performance.
  • Benardot, Dan (2006). Advanced Sports Nutrition.
  • Clark, Nancy (2008). Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook. 4th ed.
