Ask a SIRC Librarian
Dear SIRC Librarian:
Our school district in Interior Alaska is looking for guidance to set a cold temperature cutoff for student participation in outdoor sports. Is there research?
Thank you,
Elizabeth, Director
Dear Elizabeth:
Thank you again for contacting SIRC with your question. There is information available concerning wind chill in the Online Resources section of the SIRC website at http://www.sirc.ca/online_resources/weather.cfm. You will find educational resources, quizzes and fact sheets. There are wind chill safety cards that are available to be printed off and distributed that focus on downhill skiing, ice fishing, skating, snowboarding, tobogganing, hockey, running, snowshoeing, speed skating and cross
country skiing.
Resources are available from Environment Canada and can be found at http://www.msc-smc.ec.gc.ca/education/windchill/educational_e.cfm highlighting a wind chill fact sheet. American resources that may be of interest are available from NOAA at http://www.weather.gov/os/windchill/index.shtml.
Our contact at Environment Canada suggested the following resources that deal with wind chill and winter weather that you may like to read as well.
(2001). Winter Storms: The Deceptive Killer. A Preparedness Guide. Washington, D.C. : U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Federal Coordinator for Meteorological Services and Supporting Research.
Wind Chill Temperature Index. National Weather Service.
If you would like additional resources please let me know. We have other items in the SIRC Collection I can send you.
Sincerely,
Your SIRC Librarian
