Minimum Requirements for Contributions to SPORTDiscus
The factor that enables a database
to be qualified as international is the provision of its content
by contributors from as many different countries as possible.
For this to happen, each participating country should index
its own sport-related literature and transmit the data to
SIRC for inclusion into the central database. In doing so,
the published resources in the field of sport from each country
are made known to the international sport community.
It is evident that it is not always
possible in practice to cover the entire national output,
however a reasonable attempt should be made to attain this
goal so that the contribution amounts to more than just a
"token". The goal is to have the published research from each
country adequately represented in the database.
The purpose of setting minimum
requirements is to ensure a fruitful co-operation that results
in contributions that conform to the standards of the database.
In general contributions are accepted
without any obligation on the part of SIRC to provide services
or payment as recompense. It is assumed that each contributor
is motivated by a desire to make the literature of his/her
country known on a worldwide basis. However, in cases of substantial
volume or particularly desirable contributions SIRC may offer
incentives for co-operation without thereby creating an obligation
towards any other party. The continued provision of these
incentives is dependent upon the contributor's compliance
with the terms of the individual agreement.
With regard to the training of
potential indexers, SIRC will provide necessary tools such
as the SIRCThesaurus
and a copy of the SIRC Indexing Manual free of charge. Feedback
on contributions will be provided via e-mail as needed. SIRC
provides access to a Web Board for Indexing partners, to which
all SIRCThesaurus updates (descriptors and bibliography codes)
are posted as they are accepted by SIRC's thesaurus committee.
All indexing partners are invited to join the web board. Simply
point your browser to http://chat.sportquest.com/~sircindexing
and click on the new users button in order to create a personalised
profile. Questions related to indexing procedures as well
as proposals for new descriptors can be posted to this area.
SIRC often organises indexing workshops
in conjunction with IASI
meetings. Contributors are urged to send their indexers to
such workshops in order to further develop their indexing
skills. SIRC will also endeavour to train individual indexers
at SIRC's premises for an agreed-upon time, providing the
visiting indexers pay their own expenses.
