SIRC Announces Collaboration with Environment Canada


Ottawa August 2, 2007 –SIRC (Sport Information Resource Centre) is pleased to announce that they will provide severe weather awareness information with the assistance of the Meteorological Service of Canada for the sporting community.


Any outdoor sport is subject to varied weather conditions, many times quite pleasant, but in other instances very threatening. More so than ever, participants, officials and organizers of events are cognisant of the potential risks severe weather pose; however, less is known about what actions to take, when to act or how to access the information needed to make decisions regarding weather hazards.


“Threatening weather is a fact we must all deal with at some point or another, and Environment Canada possesses a wealth of information and expertise to assist SIRC provide relevant information,” says Debra Gassewitz, CEO and President of SIRC. “Having trusted professionals assist us prepare some material designed for sport ensures that we have tailored initiatives to address your needs for weather information.”


“We are very excited to be working together with SIRC to share information regarding severe weather awareness and precautions with the Canadian sporting community” says Etienne Gregoire, Environment Canada.


Topics and expert resources


SIRC has met with Environment Canada recently, and the goal of the collaboration is a mutli-level approach. Not only will specific threatening weather topics be addressed, such as severe storms, lightning and wind chill, but also how to access to Environment Canada warnings and forecasts for your activities and events. Environment Canada expertise is available across the country through outreach staff, and SIRC will work with the Meteorological Service of Canada to make this expertise available to you, through seminars or key expert contacts.


Information regarding lightning safety can now be found in the online resources section of the SIRC website. As part of SIRC’s Seminar Series, on September 11, 2007 Etienne Gregoire from Environment Canada will be presenting Severe Weather Watch and Sports.
