2004 SIRC RESEARCH AWARD

The SIRC Research Award recognizes outstanding sport research in Canada. Acknowledging how sport research benefits the Canadian sporting community is the primary purpose of this award. Over $10,000.00 in cash and prizes will be awarded to this year’s winners. Congratulations to the winners, the honourary mentions and to every participant.

The Impact of Applied Research on Athletic Excellence - High Performance Category: “ Skeletal Muscle Metabolic and Performance Adaptations to Short Sprint Interval Training” – Dr. Martin Gibala – McMaster University

On Monday April 4th, 2005 in front of his class of 225 2nd year Kinesiology students at McMaster University, the winner of the 2004 SIRC Research Award – High Performance Category was announced.

Dr. Martin Gibala, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and co-director of the Exercise Metabolism Research Laboratory at McMaster University was acknowledged and applauded as this year’s winner of the High Performance Category. “Indeed, many have commented that it was pretty cool to see their Prof. receive an award for research excellence, and it made them very proud to be in the Kinesiology program at McMaster. The SIRC Award presentation provided my students with external verification of the University’s, and my own, commitment to bring research to the classroom”. Dr. Gibala has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals and he lectures frequently at international meetings.

The primary purpose of Dr. Gibala’s research was to examine the effect of six sessions of sprint interval training on muscle oxidative potential, VO2peak, cycle endurance capacity and “time trial” performance.

The Impact of Sport on the Community – Community Award: “Imagery Use in Youth Sport: An Examination of Developmental Differences” - Dr. Krista Chandler – University of Windsor

On Wednesday April 6 th, 2005 in front of her class of 75 3rd and 4th year Kinesiology students at the University of Windsor, the winner of the 2004 SIRC Research Award – Community Category was announced.

Dr. Krista Chandler is the associate professor in the Faculty of Human Kinetics at the University of Windsor. She is recognized for her work in the psychology of sport. She works with athletes of all ages, levels and sport. She helps athletes achieve their personal goals through such techniques as increasing confidence, developing a positive attitude, effective team building and proper visualization.

The purpose of Dr. Chandler’s study was to investigate the function of young athletes’ imagery use from a developmental perspective.
