SIRC's Seminar Series

This is a fast-paced presentation that moves quickly through hot topics and issues of the day. In this session, we will provide the basics on:
- SOCAN's new efforts to collect on license fees for playing music at sport practices and events;
- Ontario's new ban on handheld devices while driving and what it means for your employees and volunteers;
- Discrimination complaints are on the rise - what is the your best response and defense?;
- A quick overview of the legal and privacy dimensions of social networking technologies - what privacy?);
- Revisiting the fraud triad in a time of economic downturn - what should your organization be doing to protect against fraud?;
- An update on some new, interesting cases of interest to sport people (Hussack, Wong, Clifford). Discussion to follow.
This workshop will be presented by Debra Gassewitz of SIRC and Rachel Corbett and Steven Indig of
the Centre for Sport and Law.
This workshop is a co-production of the CSL and SIRC. The two organizations have recently joined forces to offer quality and relevant
educational programming to Canadian sport administrators. Topics for the 2010 calendar year will include practical and expert-driven
advice on management issues including strength-based planning, risk management, dispute resolution, succession planning, intellectual
property, proposal writing and social media. Workshops will be offered out of SIRC's Ottawa and Toronto locations.
About the speakers:
Rachel Corbett helps sport organizations manage change by providing consulting services in planning, policy development and risk management. A founder of the Centre for Sport and Law, she has worked exclusively in sport for nearly twenty years. As a change agent, she works with national and provincial sport bodies on strategic planning, organizational restructuring and risk management initiatives. Rachel also helps sport organizations to draft clear and concise policy documents to improve governance and business practices. She has served as an investigator, dispute administrator and adjudicator in sport-related disputes, and has advocated frequently for sport organizations before national tribunals. Rachel publishes widely and also lectures in several subjects in the Sport Management Department of Brock University. As a True Sport Champion, Rachel is committed to helping organizations promote safe, positive and inclusive sport experiences.
Steven Indig, Steve is a lawyer based in Toronto and is also a certified sports agent
representing professional athletes in the CFL, OHL and MLS. Steve has worked
with numerous national and provincial sport organizations providing consulting
services relating to governance, contracts, policies, disputes, investigations
and privacy. In addition, he has acted as an adjudicator on issues relating to
eligibility, conduct of athletes, coaches and membership. Steve has significant
first-hand knowledge of sport from competitive swimming at the national level,
coaching with the Vaughan Aquatic Club and refereeing basketball. Steve is also
a member of the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. Please feel free to
